A hat-trick from Gary Clarke and a sensational effort from fellow midfielder Sam Brown capped a strong Ton performance at K Sports on Wednesday.

Clarke (pictured) set the tone as early as the sixth minute, making sure Gary Lockyer's downward header hit the back of the net, following Sam Conlon's initial cross.

An early contender for goal of the season then followed before the quarter-hour, Sam Brown's quick thinking from a free-kick on half-way superbly beating the K Sports 'keeper all-ends-up.

Sports struggled to contend with Ton's pace up front - only the assistants flag denying Dale Horton from getting in on goal down the left flank.

Brown then added a third three minutes after his first, this time finding the top corner from inside the box.

Tommy Penfold and Sam Conlon had an opportunity to extend Ton's advantage further with shots that were well saved by the host's 'keeper.

Sports settled as the half went on with new signing, Timmy Babington spurning their best effort - the former Sheppey target-man blazing his shot over when well placed following good build-up play down the right.

Ton managed the second half well with substitutes introduced for both sides, and reaped further reward late on in almost identical fashion - Ryan Philpott crossing from the right and Gary Clarke the beneficiary to add gloss to a very satisfying evening for 'Ton and boss, Dan Scorer:

"With so many away on Saturday against Deal, it gave us an opportunity to look at certain players in different positions, some worked, others didn't, but they're the sort of tests you want as a squad during pre-season and we'll learn from that.

"We trained on Monday with a good but light session to come into this match, which gave us a chance to show a positive reaction from Saturday.

Fortunately we did that brilliantly, and I was really impressed with how well we applied ourselves. We spoke before about being 'season ready' and the expectation to perform as if it was a league game.

"We took complete control in the first half and the boys were enjoying it out there, which is exactly what you want.

"The second half was always going to be tougher with changes, and we expected K Sports to come back at us, but we were able to manage the game out well - something we didn't do on Saturday - and it was pleasing that we continued to dominate and take two more chances late on."

Speaking of Sam Brown's wonder-strike, Scorer added: "It was certainly audacious, but Sam's very capable of that. He has worked extremely hard this pre-season to get himself fit so it's really pleasing to see him playing so well and with confidence."

TON: Barnes, Stow, Greenfield, Phillips, Penfold, Clarke, Brown, Calvert, Lockyer, Conlon, Horton. Subs: Hughes, Tomsett, Philpott, Latham.

Kennington round off their pre-season schedule on Saturday, travelling to Honey Lane to face another SCEFL Premier Division side in Bearsted (3pm k.o).
